Day 139
The hummingbird returns
I'll admit I had another picture chosen for today...then while eating dinner I saw what could only be a hummingbird drinking from my fruit trees. I grabbed the camera and managed to snap a few pictures. Granted they're not perfect...I've shot better. However it's the first time I've had a male ruby throat in my yard...and that alone in my mind makes it post worthy.

Day 137
May 17, 2011 - Day 132
The Baltimore Oriole Returns
I knew I wasn't crazy having all my oriole feeders out! This lovely lady showed up for an hour to feed and preen. I didn't get any pictures that were better than this unfortunatly. I was too afraid that I might scare her off...she never returned though so I guess I should have gambled after all.

Princess Boo
Well it's been what seems like forever since the initial cancer diagnosis with princess boo...and she's still going strong...it's the bitch in her I think. The vet a sorely under estimated her will to live...and to make my life difficult.
But whatever she wants she gets... I just wish she wouldn't need to be fed 6 times between midnight and dawn.

May 14, 2011 - Day 129
The house finches eat oranges?
Have you noticed how almost every picture for the last month has been a bird? Looking back I almost feel guilty...like thats cheating...not really part of the project. I mean it's not like I picked up the camera to shoot those birds for the project...I'd have shot them anyways.
So is that cheating? Or is it using the subject on hand? During the winter I took close ups of every knick knack and piece of decor that I owned. Spring brought signs of life, Migration brought birds. I'm guessing that there's a really good chance that once the flowers bloom in my gardens there's going to be a lot of flower pictures.
129 days into this project and I'm still going...It's starting to feel like a bit of a chore...but that's probably because I'm trying to play catch up with 6000 images and 2 weeks worth of posts.

May 13, 2011 - Day 128
Fire in the sky
I remember the day this picture was taken. It was gloomy. Rainy. People were bitchy. The weather for May has been wet, but the thing about rain is that if stops in time sunset can be breathtaking.
I looked out back and saw this. It took my breath away. So of course I had to run out back, down the gravel road for a few more.
I just want to mention that there was no adjustment done to this picture. The colour is EXACTLY how it was that night. No satuartion adjustment, no colour boosting. That surreal colour was all natures doing.

May 12, 2011 - Day 127
Hercules!
There's only one photo that could be todays. I was sitting on the couch minding my own buisness when the thunder of the plane could be heard approaching...then the windows started rattling. I looked up and saw this guy passing overhead.
If that had been the end of it I probably wouldn't have thought twice...but you see in total it looped the airspace over our development 10 times. It brought familes out to see the plane pass overhead. Kids squealed with glee, grown ups pointed. I never cropped this picture, and while I do have a substantial zoom on my camera I didn't have to use all of it to get this picture. That's how low it was flying!

May 5 2011 - Day 120
A Belted Kingfisher
Let me start by saying that while this is a far from perfect picture technically I felt that there could be no other for this day. Our development has a retention pond. There's nothing much in it other than geese and ducks. So imagine my surprise when I heard what could only be the call of a Belted Kingfisher while walking my dog.
I turned and there he was...just sitting there. So I went home swapped my dog for my camera and went back hoping he'd still be there. He was.
Here's the thing about Kingfishers...they NEVER let someone get within 50 feet of them. Believe me I've tried. I've snuck, I've crept, I've tried Military Stealth techniques, but it never fails. He spots you and moves 200 feet further down the shore line. So you follow. And as soon as you think you've gotten close enough to maybe get a picture that _might_ be clear, he flies away a split second before the shutter releases.
I can't tell you how many hours I've spent chasing these little guys. I can't help it...I don't like to say there's a bird that's simply not photographable.
This was the best that I had from that day. I like it. The irony that there's not a fish or minnow in the pond he spent the week hunting made me happy. Revenge of a sort I guess.

May 4, 2011 - Day 119
Swainson Hawk
Okay here we go!! I've been without my computer for the last 2 weeks...apparently I had over 400 virus' on it so i've spent the week frantically trying to edit 1000's of images on a monitor that seems off colour wise.
This picture was taken on a very windy day just behind my house. The swainson's Hawk let me get withing 8 feet of her before taking off. I think she was just hoping that I would leave...I believe we had 60 km wind gusts and she was just trying to hold on.

Day 116
May 1, 2011
It seems only fitting that the picture from Sunday be of the insane blizzard that arrived to open the month of May. It's Assinaboine park looking gorgeous and pristine... the blizzard caught many off guard...especially the deer that I saw hunkered down at the tree lines. At the same time though it was beautiful...and frustrating.
I had my 4th 1/2 marathon to run...needless to say it didn't go well for me. Below is a picture of me at the start...full of eager anticipation...
